Roasted Mugwort
Artemisia vulgaris
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a perennial herb of 50-60cm, its thick stem grooved lengthways and its broad, pinnately lobed leaves two-toned: smooth dark green above, ash-white below under a mat of fine hairs. It grows wild across much of Vietnam and through Asia and Europe, and households here keep a few plants around the house rather than growing it in quantity. Leaves and young shoots are cut in June, around the fifth-lunar-month festival, and dried in the shade; the down sieved from them is rolled into moxa cones. The leaves carry an essential oil of cineole and thujone, and are simmered or steeped like tea.
