Sarcandra glabra

Sarcandra (Sarcandra glabra) is a small shrub of one to two metres, with round, hairless branches and opposite leaves, elliptic to oblong, 7 to 18 cm long, pointed and sharply toothed. Tiny stalkless white flowers open in short branching spikes in June and July, and by August it carries small round berries of a brick red. It grows scattered on Vietnamese hill country, at forest margins and on damp slopes, from Lạng Sơn and Ninh Bình through Thừa Thiên-Huế to Kon Tum and Lâm Đồng. The whole plant is cut in summer and autumn and dried in the shade, while roots are lifted year-round, cut into lengths and shade-dried.
