St. Paul's Wort
Sigesbeckia orientalis
St Paul's wort (Sigesbeckia orientalis), hy thiêm in Vietnamese, is an annual of 30 to 40 centimetres, sometimes reaching a metre, much branched and covered in glandular hairs. Its opposite leaves are diamond-shaped and toothed, 4 to 10 centimetres long, and the small yellow flower heads sit on sticky stalks within spreading, spoon-shaped bracts that catch on anything brushing past, hence the Vietnamese name cỏ đi, the grass that goes with you. It grows wild in every province of Vietnam. The whole plant is cut before flowering, in April and May, and dried in shade or sun in small bundles; the dried herb is bitter.
