Strobilanthes Extract
Strobilanthes cusia
Strobilanthes (Strobilanthes cusia), known in Vietnam as chàm mèo, is a medium-sized shrub of the acanthus family, with oval leaves and flowers carried in spikes, blue, pinkish-purple or white, each with four stamens, two of them long. The fruit is a capsule, and the plant is worked up into indigo dye. It is one of three plants met in Vietnam from which the dye thanh đại is prepared. The other two, grown in mountain districts here, are Indigofera tinctoria, sown in February to May and cut from June to August with a second cutting a month later, and the knotweed Polygonum tinctorium, cut in autumn before it flowers.
