Ligusticum striatum
Xuyên khung (Ligusticum striatum) is a perennial of the carrot family with a hollow, ribbed stem and thrice-divided leaves on long sheathing stalks, the leaflets deeply cut and fragrant when rubbed; its small white flowers stand in compound umbels. It is grown mainly in Sichuan, and grows in Yunnan and Guizhou, and has been brought into Vietnam, where it does well only in cool uplands such as Sa Pa; lowland trials have failed. Planted from stem-node cuttings in late spring, the rhizome is lifted after two years, trimmed of stalks and rootlets, and dried in a well-ventilated place or at low heat so the essential oil is not lost.
