Wild Bitter Melon Vine
Momordica charantia
Wild bitter melon vine (Momordica charantia) is a climbing vine with an angular, faintly downy stem and alternate leaves cut into five to seven toothed lobes, paler beneath and short-haired along the veins. Pale yellow flowers about two centimetres across sit singly in the leaf axils, male and female on the same plant, and set spindle-shaped fruit eight to fifteen centimetres long, covered in warty bumps. The plant is grown in every province of Vietnam, north and south, and is found in southern China, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. The leaf is taken from the vine alongside the fruit and the dried seed. The fruit holds a bitter glucoside, momordicin.
