Daucus carota
Carrot (Daucus carota) is a biennial of the umbellifer family, grown for its fleshy taproot, which varies in shape by variety. Above ground it carries alternate, pinnately divided leaves, and the flowers come in compound umbels, small and white or pink, with a single sterile purple floret at the centre of each head. The wild plant makes no swollen root: the carrot grown today is a cross between Daucus carota and Daucus maximus. Thought to have come first from France, it is now grown widely in western and eastern countries, and is a recent arrival in Vietnam. The root is used fresh or dried; its colour comes from carotene.
