Fish Mint Powder
Houttuynia cordata
Fish mint (Houttuynia cordata) is a small perennial herb that spreads by an underground rhizome, throwing up stems to about 40cm bearing alternate, heart-shaped leaves. It grows wild in damp, low-lying ground throughout Vietnam, flowering through the summer in slim spikes ringed by four white bracts that read at a glance as a single flower. The whole plant is gathered, used fresh or dried in the sun or a drier, and in Vietnamese kitchens the fresh leaves are eaten with fish. Crushed, the plant smells strongly and unmistakably of fish, an odour carried by its trace essential oil.
