Hibiscus sabdariffa
Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), known in English as roselle or red sorrel and in Vietnamese as bụp giấm, is an erect annual herb 0.5-3 m tall with smooth purplish stems and broad, three- to five-lobed leaves 6-15 cm long. Its flowers are pinkish to yellow with a purple centre and never open widely; once they fade, the calyx behind them thickens into a fleshy red cup 2.5-5.5 cm long, distinctly longer than the fruit it encloses. Probably African in origin, the plant is now found throughout the tropics, tolerates drought and flowers as the days shorten.
