Artocarpus heterophyllus
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a large tree of the mulberry family that can reach over thirty metres, with thick, undivided leaves 9 to 22 centimetres long and downy young shoots. It is grown in every province of Vietnam, and in Laos and Cambodia too, chiefly for its fruit. The female flower heads form on the trunk and on the branches, swelling into a compound fruit 30 to 60 centimetres long, its rind bristling with short spines and still green, or barely yellow, when ripe. Inside is the part eaten: pale yellow flesh, sweet and very fragrant. Unripe fruit is boiled as a vegetable, and the seeds are roasted or boiled.
