Lotus Leaf Powder
Nelumbo nucifera
Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic plant rooted in mud below the water, its leaves standing clear of the surface on long stalks set with small prickles, while the cylindrical rhizome, the edible ngó sen, creeps through the bed. Each blade is shield-shaped and very large, 60 to 70cm across, with veins radiating out from the stalk; the flowers are big, white or pinkish red. Lotus is grown in many parts of Vietnam for food and for herbal use, and is gathered from July to September. The leaves hold a number of alkaloids, among them nuciferine, roemerine and anonaine.
