Mangosteen Peel Powder

Garcinia mangostana

The mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a substantial tree, reaching 20m, with thick, tough, dark green leaves 15 to 20cm long. Thought to have come from the Sunda and Molucca islands, it was brought to Vietnam by missionaries and is now widely planted in the south, as it is in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Its round fruit is about the size of an orange, with a thick, hard, dark red rind enclosing six to eighteen seeds in a sweet, fragrant white aril. The rind is the part kept and dried in the sun; it holds seven to thirteen per cent tannin, and was once looked at as a tanning material.
