Ananas comosus
Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a long-lived tropical plant that grows as a rosette of stiff, long leaves edged with hard spines. Once the plant is grown, a stalk of 10 to 40 centimetres rises from the leaves bearing a single head of purple-bracted flowers and topped by a small tuft of leaves; what is eaten as the fruit is really the flower axis and its swollen, water-filled leaves massed together, the true fruits sitting in the eyes on its surface. Native to Central America and now grown across most tropical countries, it is planted extensively in Vietnam, for the fruit and for export. In the south it is called thơm.
