Basil Seed
Ocimum basilicum
Basil seed, hạt é, comes from Ocimum basilicum, an annual herb of the mint family that branches from the base and stands 50 to 60 centimetres tall, with paired oblong leaves, green in some kinds and dull purple-black in others, and small white or purplish flowers set in whorls of five or six along the spike. Thought to have come originally from India and China, it is grown across Vietnam: in the north for its leaves and shoots as a kitchen herb and, since 1975, for distilling, and in the south for the shiny black seed, which swells in plain or sweetened water into a white jelly-like coat.
