Chinese Onion
Allium chinense
Chinese onion (Allium chinense), known in English as rakkyo, is a biennial herb of the onion family up to 60 cm tall, with three or four leaves, rarely five, D-shaped or almost triangular in cross-section and three- to five-ridged. The part harvested is the ellipsoid bulb, up to roughly 4 cm long and 1.5 cm across. The plant is native to central and eastern China and is grown widely there and in Japan, and only to a limited extent in South-East Asia. Its flowering stem is round and solid, and the head carries up to thirty flowers with purplish tepals.
