Doi Seed
Michelia tonkinensis
Doi (Michelia tonkinensis, also recorded as Talauma gioi) is a tall forest tree, over 20 metres, with a straight trunk, grey bark split lengthwise, and glossy leaves furred rust-brown underneath. It grows wild through the mountain forests of Hoà Bình, Phú Thọ, Vĩnh Phúc, Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang, Lào Cai and Thanh Hoá. Large solitary flowers open in April and May; by September the woody fruits split along the ventral seam into two halves, the seeds held on the central column. What upland markets sell is small and wrinkled, no bigger than a chinaberry, pounded with salt as a seasoning. The scent is coumarin-sweet, with a faint camphor edge.
