Litsea cubeba
May chang (Litsea cubeba) is a small tree of the laurel family, about five metres tall, with alternate lance-shaped leaves, dark green above and ashy white beneath, that smell of lemongrass when rubbed. Male and female flowers, white, grow on separate trees, and the fruit is small, green when young and black when ripe, like a peppercorn. The tree grows wild in the high, cold forests of Lai Châu, Lào Cai, Yên Bái, Hà Giang and Tuyên Quang, and is now planted from seed in places. The fruit ripens between April and June and is picked mainly to distil its oil, 2-6% of the fruit, pale yellow and 70-90% citral.
